Why charities love in memory donations

A charity runs on the kindness and goodwill of the people that it is there to help. Without generous donations from the public, charities would not be able to do all of the good work that they do.

There are many ways to donate to charity or to raise money for them, but in memory donations have become a vital part of their fundraising.

What is an ‘in memory’ donation?

Simply put, an in memory donation is when money is donated to a charity in someone’s memory after they have passed away. This was traditionally done at the funeral service, where a plate might have been passed around collecting money for a charity that was important or particularly relevant to the deceased.

In more modern day funerals, you might see a QR code on the order of service that will bring you here, to funeral-notices.co.uk, where you can donate on the deceased's own funeral notice page. Alternatively, the family might just share the notice on their social media so that friends and family can choose to donate in their own time.

Why do charities love in memory donations?

Of course charities love to receive donations in memory of a loved one, any money coming in is always going to be appreciated, but donations in memory are extra special as it helps the charity (and the family) to create a lasting legacy on behalf of the deceased. That money could go towards vital research or equipment that could help other people that suffer from the same illness, or pay for the upkeep of one of their favourite places.

We have found that charities really do appreciate the new trend of donating online, because the old way of managing lots of cash and cheques was very costly and time consuming. Donating digitally through funeral-notices.co.uk also allows the charity to collect Gift Aid, which they would not be able to do with an anonymous £10 note left on a plate.

We have also found that the funeral directors appreciate us taking this extra bit of admin off their hands, too!

How do I donate to charity in memory of someone?

The easiest way is to speak to your funeral director, and mention that you would like to collect donations in memory of your loved one here on funeral-notices.co.uk. They will likely already have dealt with us in the past, and will be happy to advise.

Did you know that we recently reached an incredible milestone of having over £5,000,000 raised for charities by the incredible family and friends who visit our site? You can read more about that here.
