What does it mean to be inclusive?

There are many different types of people in the world, with different backgrounds, beliefs, and abilities. Nobody should be treated differently because of any of these things, and that’s what inclusion is all about; making sure everyone, no matter who they are, feels included.

What is inclusion?

Inclusion is the act of ensuring that everyone, no matter what race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, ability, religion or culture, has a sense of belonging and is welcomed equally. Our differences should be recognised and respected, but we should not be treated differently because of them.

How does inclusion tie into diversity?

Often, diversity and inclusion are grouped together, as they go hand in hand. However, you can have one without the other, so it is important to know the difference so you are able to be both diverse and inclusive.

Diversity focuses on representation of differences in identity, while inclusion is ensuring these differences are respected, and people feel included despite their differences. Many characteristics fall under the diversity umbrella, such as race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, ability, religion, culture, education, marital status, and background.

A diverse workplace would ensure to hire people from a variety of backgrounds, while an inclusive one would create an environment where everyone, no matter their background, feels welcome and valued. Therefore it is important to be both diverse and inclusive.

How can I be more inclusive?

  • Be respectful of others, regardless of their differences. Don’t treat anybody differently just because of one of their characteristics.
  • Listen more, and think before you speak. Try not to use terms that could be considered offensive or exclusionary.
  • Educate others about diversity and inclusion by encouraging inclusive conversations about diversity. This will help you to learn more, as well as educating others.
It’s important to remember that while we must respect diversity and the different characteristics of others, we must also remember they are not defined by those characteristics.
