What is Social Media Kindness Day?

Social Media Kindness Day (SMKD) takes place annually on 9th November. SMKD was created to encourage people to be kinder to others when using social media. Sometimes people say things over social media that they wouldn’t say directly to someone’s face, as they cannot see the person’s reaction and the hurt and upset that can be caused by their words.

SMKD was also created in memory of TV Presenter Caroline Flack, whose birthday would have been 9th November. The first Social Media Kindness Day took place on 9th November 2020. Caroline’s tribute page can be found here: Caroline Flack

The goal is to make social media a kinder place, and to remind people that unkindness should never be tolerated, whether it is face to face or through a screen.

How to take part in Social Media Kindness Day:
  • Help stop unkindness when you see it online, and explain to the person being unkind that it will not be tolerated
  • If you see someone experiencing negativity or unkindness on social media, check in on them to make sure they are alright
  • Post a selfie of yourself making the love sign to social media to show your support for the movement and tag your friends to spread the word

What is World Kindness Day?

World Kindness Day takes place globally on 13th November every year as part of the World Kindness Movement (www.theworldkindnessmovement.org). The first World Kindness Day took place in 1998, and is observed by many countries around the world.

The idea of World Kindness Day is to spread kindness through small, random acts. You do not have to make a grand gesture to show kindness, even the smallest gesture can make a big difference to someone’s day.

How to take part in World Kindness Day:
  • Perform random acts of kindness to friends, family and strangers, e.g. compliment someone, smile at strangers, hold a door open, let a car out on a busy road.
  • Check in with someone you haven’t spoken to in a while
  • Be kind to yourself as well as others - treat yourself to something you’ve been wanting

The UK celebrates Kindness Day UK, also on 13th November annually, to celebrate and promote kindness in all its forms. Visit the website: www.kindnessuk.com/world_kindness_day_kindness_day_uk.php
