Now that Remembrance Sunday has been and gone for this year, the
Royal British Legion can start to look at all the money raised from this year's Poppy Appeal and set about the task of distributing the funds to wherever it needs to go. But that raises a question for all those members of the public who have donated or bought a poppy; what happens to all the money raised from the Poppy Appeal?
The Royal British Legion are the organisation behind the annual Poppy Appeal that is based every year around Armistice Day and Remembrance Sunday. They are the UKs largest registered Armed Forces charity with 235,000 members, 110,000 volunteers, and they have been around since their founding in 1921. They are nationally recognised as the custodians of Remembrance.
To quote their website, the Royal British Legion ‘provide lifelong support to serving and ex-serving personnel and their families. Our support starts after one day of service and continues through life, long after service is over.’
The money raised from the annual Poppy Appeal goes towards providing support in all forms to any serving or ex-Armed Forces member, as well as to their families. This could be supporting people through the mental challenges that come with bereavement or transitioning to civilian life, or it could be supporting them through physical recovery and rehabilitation.
The Legion also work alongside politicians and government officials to champion the interests of the Armed Forces community. Their vast network allows them to provide all kinds of support, including full-time care in one of their six care homes, or even commission their very own ship as they did in 2019 to commemorate the 75th anniversary of D-Day.
