“Move every day
to beat the winter blues away”


January is widely known as a time for new beginnings but it can also be a difficult month to get through. The days are short and dark, weather tends to be dreary, and this combined with the end of the festive season can leave people feeling low. RED January’s aim is to encourage people to take part in some form of exercise every day in January, in order to combat the low moods that can affect so many of us during the winter months.

Research has shown that physical activity can help to decrease symptoms of depression and mental health issues, which is why RED January was founded initially. Just a small period of daily exercise can make a significant difference to mental health.

The choice of activity is entirely up to you. It’s important to remember that everyone is different, so you need to set a goal that works for you and your body. Whether walking, running, doing yoga, swimming or cycling, anything is fine as long as you are doing it every day. Even if you have health issues and maybe struggle with exercise, you could still join even if all you can do is walk for 10 minutes every day.

Those who work full time may feel they don’t have time to fit in physical activity every day, but it doesn’t have to be done all at once. Just doing some squats while waiting for the kettle to boil, or even doing some chair yoga at your desk can make a difference.
