A random act of kindness can be the highlight of someone’s day.
Be it a simple thing like having the door held open for you when you’ve got your hands full, or a bigger gesture like someone buying you lunch when you’ve had a particularly rough day. These seemingly small acts, when replicated by thousands of people all across the globe, make our world a happier place to live in.
The Random Acts of Kindness Foundation is a small non-profit organisation that believes in making kindness the norm. They invest their time, resources and expertise into spreading their message throughout classrooms, homes and workplaces, creating a common language of kindness between the three.
But where did the idea come from? The phrase ‘random acts of violence’ was often heard in the media, and when somebody suggested that they should instead be spending their time reporting on ‘random acts of kindness’, the movement was born.
Kindness is scientifically proven to make you happier and healthier, and when another person witnesses your random act of kindness, they are more likely to perform their own. So your one random act of kindness could not only brighten your own day and that of your recipient, but it could create a domino effect that improves the health and happiness of everyone around you.
The next official Random Acts of Kindness Day is on Thursday 17th February, 2022. This year the theme is ‘Make Kindness The Norm’, and you will find people joining in on the day using the hashtag
#MakeKindnessTheNorm across social media.
If you visit
randomactsofkindness.org you will find lots of information on how to take part; there are posters to print off and colour in, you can sign up to be a RAKtivist (Random Act of Kindness activist), but most of all you will find suggestions on how you can bestow your very own random act of kindness on a friend, colleague, or even a stranger.
