When is Pride Month in 2022?

Pride month will be celebrated from 1st June to 30th June, 2022. The month of June is primarily recognised as Pride Month in the United States, but it has since become recognised in the UK and internationally, although Pride events are held at different times of the year in many countries.

Why is Pride Month celebrated in June?

On the 28th June, 1969, members of the gay community in the USA took to the streets in a series of demonstrations that became known as the Stonewall Riots. This was in reaction to a police raid on a New York City gay bar called Stonewall Inn. The raid itself was unfortunately not out of the ordinary, but collectively the LGBTQ+ community decided that enough was enough, and they took to the streets to demand safe spaces where they could express their sexuality without fear of being attacked.

The anniversary of the Stonewall Riots was then celebrated and remembered as a watershed moment in the LGBTQ+ rights movement, and it was in 1999 that the then President, Bill Clinton, officially declared June to be "Gay & Lesbian Pride Month" for the first time.

How can I get involved in Pride Month?

Proudly flying the rainbow flag
Pride can be celebrated and supported throughout June and the rest of the year by doing something simple like flying a rainbow flag, by wearing a Pride badge, or by donating to an LGBTQ+ charity such as Stonewall or MindOut.

Throughout the month of June you will see a higher presence of support for the LGBTQ+ community on social media, so sharing the positive message is an easy way of showing that you are an ally. Rainbow laces are even being worn by sports people in support of Pride Month, and you can buy yourself a pair here.

Gay Pride Shop also has a great calendar of Pride events all across the UK and Ireland, so you can plan in advance to attend your local celebrations or travel to one of the major cities like London or Manchester to attend their events.
