As National Grief Awareness Week 2024 approaches, we are reminded of the importance of understanding grief, acknowledging its impact, and supporting those who are going through it. This year, from 2nd December to 8th December, National Grief Awareness Week serves as a time to bring the often silent journey of grieving to light, create community support, and foster compassion for the millions affected by loss.
This year’s theme is “Shine A Light”, encouraging people to help raise awareness of the bereavement services across the country. The idea is to nominate people, places and projects in your community you feel are going above and beyond to make a difference to those who are grieving.
- Use #ShineALight on social media to share your story and raise awareness of bereavement services across the country
- Check in on a family member, friend or neighbour who may be struggling with grief
- Be open and honest about grief to help spread awareness and normalise speaking up
- Light landmark buildings orange or light a candle at 6pm on 8th December, to remember those who have died and to support those bereaved across the UK
- Listen. Many grieving individuals simply want to be heard. Create a safe space where they can share as much or as little as they want.
- Offer Practical Help. Daily tasks can become much more difficult when people are overwhelmed with grief. Offer to cook meals, provide childcare or run errands to lighten their load.
- Be There Long-Term. Check in regularly, especially on significant dates like anniversaries or birthdays.
