Invisible Disabilities Week 2024 takes place from the 20th to the 26th of October this year, and is dedicated to raising awareness and fostering understanding of the challenges faced by millions of people living with conditions that are not immediately visible. While many disabilities come with clear physical markers, invisible disabilities are often hidden, making them harder to recognise, and therefore harder for others to understand and accommodate.

What Are Invisible Disabilities?

Invisible Disabilities can be caused by a broad spectrum of conditions that may not be outwardly apparent, but significantly impact a person’s daily life. These can include chronic illnesses such as chronic fatigue syndrome and fibromyalgia, mental health conditions such as depression and anxiety, autoimmune disorders such as multiple sclerosis and lupus, and neurological conditions such as autism and epilepsy. These are just a handful of the conditions that can cause invisible disabilities.

Why is Invisible Disability Week Important?

Having a week dedicated to Invisible Disabilities helps to raise awareness in the UK and around the world, especially to those who do not understand how challenging life can be for those living with an invisible disability.

Invisible Disabilities Week allows us to:

Share: This week provides an opportunity for people living with disabilities to share their stories and experiences with others.
Educate: By spreading awareness, we can help others recognise the diversity of disabilities and encourage more inclusive attitudes.
Empathise: When people are educated about invisible disabilities, they are more likely to respond with kindness and consideration rather than scepticism.
Advocate: People with invisible disabilities often need accommodations in the workplace, schools or public places that aren’t always provided. This week is a reminder to advocate for policies that are inclusive and supportive of all people, regardless of whether their disability is visible.

How Can I Take Part in Invisible Disabilities Week?

Listen and learn: Take the time to listen to people with invisible disabilities and educate yourself on the wide variety of conditions they may face. Books, podcasts and online resources can provide insight into their experiences.
Share your own or others’ stories: If you have an invisible disability, share your story on social media. If you don’t have a disability but know someone who does, offer to help share their story.
Use inclusive language: Being mindful of the language we use can make a big difference. Phrases such as ‘you don’t look ill’ or ‘it’s all in your head’ can be deeply hurtful. Instead offer support and understanding by asking ‘How can I help?’ or ‘What do you need?’
Participate in online campaigns: Invisible Disabilities Week is often accompanied by social media campaigns and virtual events. Use the hashtags #invisibledisabilitiesweek and #invisiblenomore to spread awareness and join the conversation online.

By learning more about invisible disabilities and advocating for greater understanding, we can create a more inclusive world where everyone feels seen, valued, and supported, regardless of whether their disability is visible or not.
