Welcome to the first in a series of blogs designed to help you make positive changes to your life. Our first in the series of life skills blogs looks at blogging.
Blogging is a great way to express yourself and many people find it quite cathartic. If you've ever wanted to write a blog there's never been a better time than now. Today's blog will give you a few pointers on how to get started.
There are lots of free blogging platforms out there but a few popular ones are Wordpress, Medium (from Twitter) or Blogger (from Google).
Start by creating a domain name, which is what people will have to search to find your blog. If you want to keep it simple just use your name. If you have a specific focus for your blog then your domain can reflect this.
Next you can start designing your blog by choosing your ‘theme’. There are lots of different themes available so choose one that fits with your personal brand and blog image. Most themes have reviews and ratings so have a read of these to get a better feel for each theme before deciding which one to go with.
If you don’t know what to blog about, think about something that genuinely interests you otherwise blogging will feel like a chore. It could be a fashion/beauty blog if that’s what you’re passionate about. Or even reviewing books or films. Don’t be put off that the blogging industry is so saturated. If you’re blogging for work then think of it as helping your target audience or if you’re blogging for a hobby then make sure you’re enjoying it and benefiting from it too.
Set yourself a realistic upload schedule. An upload schedule will keep you motivated and improve your time management skills which is always helpful. It’s also good to keep a consistent upload schedule so that your readers know when to expect new content from you.
No one will be able to read your blog if they can’t find it, so share and promote it on your own social channels. Depending on your blog content, Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter and Instagram are great platforms to promote your blog if you feel they’re relevant to your audience.
Starting your blog might be difficult but you’ll soon get into the swing of it and find your natural rhythm.
The best thing you can do is just get going. Ask for feedback, ask people to comment and share their thoughts.
