One such survivor with a tale to tell was
Eve Leadbetter, who passed away on Wednesday 20th March 2022, aged 91. Eve arrived in the UK from Prague via the Kindertransport (German for ‘children’s transport’) aged just 8 years old in July 1939. Unfortunately her brother and parents did not survive, but Eve thrived here, getting married, becoming a teacher, and even a deputy headteacher.
Another holocaust survivor turned teacher was
Ruth David, previously known as Ruth Finch, and by the maiden name Oppenheimer. Ruth lived in Leicester, and taught at five different schools in the area. Complications brought on by Covid-19 took Eve’s life on 6th April 2020, aged 91.
Herman Goldwag, known as Zvi, passed away in Cheltenham on the 8th May 2011. We haven’t got too much information on Herman’s life, but we know he was a holocaust survivor who went on to marry and become the dearly loved father of three children, as well as a devoted grandfather.
We also hold notices for people who, on the event of their passing, wanted to raise money for holocaust related charities. For example,
Ruth Margaret Webster and
Colin Rosenstiel asked for donations in their memory to be made to the
Holocaust Educational Trust
Finally we have a notice for
Lady Margaret Kagan, who passed away in Huddersfield on 31st March, 2011. Not much is given away in the notice about Lady Margaret’s incredible life, but there is a full article on the
Huddersfield Live website that dives into what happened to her and her family when the Nazis invaded. It’s a really interesting read, and I’d highly recommend spending a few minutes having a read about everything that Lady Margaret had to overcome.
Thank you for reading.
