When it comes to making choices, many people are considering the impact on the environment as importantly as financial costs. Funerals are no exception.
In today's blog we will explore the environmental impact of funeral cars and the increasing trend towards electric vehicles in the profession.
Funeral Director Andrew Holliday in the new hybrid hearse
Funeral Notices Account Manager Rob Stebbing recently visited the funeral home of
J Naylor Funeral Directors in Scunthorpe. They have recently updated their fleet of funeral vehicles to hybrid electric/petrol in a bid to reduce their impact on the environment. They told him:
"Our friendly and approachable staff are always on hand to answer any questions you may have, and nothing is too much trouble. As a well established, privately owned business, we aim to give a modern service, backed up by our traditional values.
"At the same time, we are conscious of our impact on the environment - the introduction of our new Mercedes hybrid fleet and our continued focus on online notices helps reduce our environmental impact, whilst at the same
time offering our clients a flexible, contemporary and professional service."
According to a report by the
BBC in 2020:
"Private transport is one of the world’s biggest sources of greenhouse gases, with emissions rising every year. "
Acutely aware of this, many industries are turning to alternative energy for their transportation needs. The funeral industry is also making this change. A quick Google search for 'electric hearses' returns many UK funeral homes showcasing their latest electric or hybrid vehicles as well as suppliers to the industry selling fully electric fleets to Funeral Directors.
For families choosing a Funeral Director, knowing their vehicles are more environmentally friendly can be an important consideration. More and more people are choosing electric or hybrid cars nowadays so it follows they may want the same for their final journey.
In the UK, all cars and vans sold must be fully electric by 2035. The UK government plans to restrict the sale of petrol and diesel cars by 2030 and ban the sale of hybrid cars by 2035. These rules also apply to funeral cars.
For Funeral Directors, the electric hearse not only has an environmental impact it is also described as being a smoother and more dignified ride for a loved one's final journey. It seems then that the change to electric vehicles is an obvious one for Funeral Directors to make.
