The beginning of a new year has always been synonymous with a fresh start - new year’s resolutions have been being made for thousands of years. However, it’s a known fact that many people give up on their resolutions early on in the year, often causing a sense of failure and discouragement. So how can you pick an achievable resolution, but also try to incorporate self-care?

Set Boundaries
It’s important to learn to say no if needed. Setting boundaries protects your time, energy and mental health. So don’t work out of hours, decline social invitations if you need rest, and carve out regular “me-time”. Boundaries help to maintain balance and prevent burnout.

Mindfulness
There are countless ways to bring more mindfulness into your day; meditation, journalling, yoga, deep breathing. Practicing mindfulness can help to reduce stress, enhance focus, and improve mental health. Start small with a few minutes of journalling or deep breathing each day - apps such as Calm and Headspace can help.

Make Movement Enjoyable
Exercise is hugely important, and is often used as a new year’s resolution. The trick is to find a form of exercise that you actually enjoy doing, making it easier to stick to. A daily yoga practice first thing, a walk on your lunch break, regular hiking in nature; exercise is not limited to working out at the gym. Find something you enjoy, and it will be much easier to stick with it.

Nurture Relationships
Maintaining relationships is important, and can fall by the wayside if you’re busy. Prioritise relationships and make time for meaningful conversations, express gratitude, and ask for help if you need it. Schedule regular check-ins with friends and family, in person or send a quick message.

Prioritise Sleep
Many people don’t get enough quality sleep, which can greatly affect their mental health. Create a nightly routine that promotes relaxation, wind down before bedtime and try to limit screen time. Reading or taking a warm bath can help you wind down.

Practice Financial Self-Care
Money matters can be a significant source of stress. This year, focus on creating financial habits that bring you peace of mind. Build a budget, save for future goals, and allow yourself some guilt-free spending on things that bring you joy. Use spreadsheets or budgeting tools to track expenses and help you save. Set aside a little each month for self-care treats.

Healthy Eating
Another common new year’s resolution, the diet. Instead of restrictive diets, think about how you can eat more healthily in a more natural way. Aim for a balanced diet that includes all the things you love but is also rich in fruit and vegetables. Plan your meals ahead to avoid stress, and try to cook from scratch when you can.

Pursue Joy
There’s more to life than just responsibility, so allow yourself to experience joy. Take up a new hobby, explore creative outlets, or learn something new. Set aside time every week for a hobby or interest.

Seek Help
If you feel you need help, seek professional support. Therapy and counselling can provide invaluable tools for navigating life’s challenges, and there’s no shame in reaching out.

Celebrate the Small Things
Celebrate your progress, no matter how small. Keep a journal to track your achievements and moments of gratitude. Practice self-compassion when you slip up - remember nobody is perfect.

Hit two birds with one stone and choose a new year’s resolution that will also help you to take care of your mental health. Prioritise self-care, set more achievable goals, and always celebrate small victories. If you realise a resolution is not possible, move on and create something you can do more easily.
