Coping with grief is difficult at any time of the year, but it can be especially difficult on special occasions such as Valentine’s Day.
If you’re worried about how to cope on Valentine’s Day this year, here are some tips to help you:
- Use Valentine’s Day as a treat day for you - set aside some time to engage in your favourite hobby or an activity you enjoy, cook your favourite meal or order a takeaway, treat yourself to a box of chocolates or a bunch of flowers.
- If you’re worried about the fuss of Valentine’s Day at work, take the day off. You could plan a day trip or just have a lazy day at home, whichever you’d prefer.
- Try your hand at something creative - try writing a poem or short story, do some painting, or take some photos to make a scrapbook.
- Do something that will help you to feel close to your lost loved one - visit their favourite place, cook their favourite meal, take part in their favourite activity.
- Spend some time with family and friends so you can reminisce together and share memories of your loved one. This will help you feel less alone.
- Allow yourself to feel - it’s OK not to be OK. Nobody expects you to get over your grief straight away, and it’s likely to be worse on special occasions. Have a cry if needed; bottling up your emotions will only make you feel worse in the long run.
- Lighting a candle and placing a tribute on your loved one’s notice can help you to feel closer to them. We feel it is important for you to have somewhere to go to remember your loved ones, and our lasting tribute pages allow you to do this.
