We all know how pets can be an incredible companion and comfort, especially to those who may otherwise feel lonely in their later years, so it is no wonder that people would want to raise money to help pets in need.
Donations in memory of a loved one who has passed away are one way of leaving a lasting legacy in their name. That’s what the family of
Nancy Beatrice Alcock and
Berenice Conway decided to do, raising £1,000 for the PDSA over those two collections.
The People's Dispensary for Sick Animals, to give them their full title, are the vet charity for pets in need, and have been taking care of pets for over 105 years. In 2022, across their 48 Pet Hospitals, PDSA vets and vet nurses cared for over 4,600 sick and injured pets every day!
The PDSA are there to care for pets when their owners are unable to afford the huge vet bills. On top of that, they are also a leading authority on pet health, believing that every pet deserves to lead a happy and healthy life.
The PDSA also run ‘
PetWise’ an educational initiative that aims to teach children and young people all about pets, pet health, and all the ways in which the PDSA can help. They even have plenty of resources available for teachers and community groups to hold their own sessions.
The PDSA Animal Wellbeing (PAW) Report launched in 2011, and it is the UK’s biggest annual assessment of pet wellbeing. Each year they survey a sample of dog, cat and rabbit owners to estimate pet populations and understand if their welfare needs are being adequately met.
For example, findings from the 2023 PAW Report show that 67% of veterinary professionals have seen an increase in the pet population in the last two years. Currently 53% of UK adults own a pet, and 29% own a dog. You can read more of their key findings
