Deciding which charity to shine a spotlight on each month is never a hard choice, I usually start by heading to our ‘Most Read This Month’ section and have a browse through the notices to see who people have chosen to have collections for.

This month the notice for Denah Moody of Crowle, near Scunthorpe, grabbed my attention, simply because ‘Guts UK’ is a charity I had never heard of until now! Who are they? What do they do? Let’s find out the answers together.

Who are Guts UK and what do they do?

Guts UK is the only UK charity funding research into the digestive system from top to tail; the gut, liver and pancreas.

Their vision is to increase awareness and knowledge of digestive disorders through research and events, bringing about important change in what they say is a misunderstood area of health.

They lay out their mission goals as the following:
  • Provide expert information: Information is power! When armed with information, patients can take control of their health and make informed decisions.
  • Raise public awareness: Our research shows that 58% of people are embarrassed to talk about their digestive condition or symptoms. 51% of people delay seeking advice for their symptoms for over 6 months. When the Guts UK roadshow comes to town, we empower people to seek help.
  • Fund life-changing & life-saving research: Guts UK is the only UK charity funding research into the digestive system from top to tail. It’s time the UK got to grips with guts!
The digestive system is not the most glamorous of topics, and on browsing their website I’ve found that Guts UK seems to fully embrace this fact and have some fun with it. Take their ‘Poo-Torial’ for instance, where you can easily check whether or not you should be worried about the your own toilet habits; something which is often viewed as a taboo subject.

What is Kranky Panky?

Every November, Guts UK share powerful real-life stories from people affected by pancreatitis. They call this campaign ‘Kranky Panky’, and you can read all the stories that they have shared this year by visiting here.

Pancreatitis is a condition where the pancreas becomes inflamed for a short period of time, causing abdominal pain, high temperatures and sickness. Most people get better within a week, but severe cases can cause complications. Steve’s Story struck a chord with me in particular, and made me more aware of the dangers of pancreatitis.
