Ah, social media. 15 years ago, a face book was a collection of photographs used to cast actors for roles, and a tweet was just a noise that birds made. However, in the year 2021, social media is a dominant form of entertainment for many all over the world, and to some a source of lucrative income.
In a pre-Covid world, we all consumed large amount of social media, what with there being so much choice available. But in 2020 and in to 2021 – with the vast majority of us spending most of our time at home – social media consumption is higher than ever before. Snapchat, Facebook, Reddit, Twitter, Instagram, Pintrest, there’s so much choice and something to suit the tastes of everyone.
But how much is too much? And can too much social media be bad for your health? In today’s blog I am going to take a look into this question, which has become ever more prominent in recent times.
A downside of social media – particularly during what has been a very tough time for many of us – is that it only shows you the parts of people’s lives that they want you to see. If you’re feeling down like many people currently are, seeing curated pics of what others are up to most likely won’t help that. For every picture of them playing football in the garden with their children, there’s plenty going on in their day that’s of little interest, which is important to keep in mind when browsing social media.
Another thing you should keep in mind is that social media - particularly Twitter – can oftentimes be a very confrontational place, where people struggle to agree with each other and insults are hurled. Once again, if you spend too much time on social media you may well find yourself sucked into this kind of behaviour. Remember, social media is supposed to be for fun, and when it isn’t anymore it’s a good idea to go elsewhere.
But the above is not to say everything about social media is bad. During the Coronavirus pandemic, it has been a life-saver for many, allowing them to keep in touch with loved ones much easier (and cheaper) than would have been possible in the past. Imagine if you will that the pandemic struck 20 years prior. Think how hard it would’ve been to stay in touch with family and friends! For that reason, social media can also be a positive in many of our lives, making us just that, social.
Also, during these difficult times, local businesses have effectively utilised social media to promote themselves and sell their products in a way which wouldn’t have been possible without the platforms available today. This has in turn allowed many of them to not only survive, but thrive in the most challenging of circumstances.
