As the winter chill settles in and the excitement of Christmas and New Year fades, January can often feel like a tough month for many. The third Monday in January is often labelled “Blue Monday”, and is considered the most depressing day of the year. However, this day has been reclaimed by the
Samaritans, who wanted to transform the day into something positive: “Brew Monday.”
Instead of focusing on gloom and sadness,
Brew Monday encourages people to connect with others over a cup of tea or coffee. The idea is simple yet powerful: a shared brew can spark conversations, create connections, and remind us that we are not alone.
This year Brew Monday falls on 20th January. It is an opportunity for all of us to prioritise mental health, not just for ourselves but for those around us. By replacing “blue” with “brew” the day becomes a celebration of kindness, community and compassion.
Mental health struggles are more common than many realise, and the start of the year can be a particularly challenging time. Financial pressures, shorter days, and the lingering effects of holiday stress can weigh heavily on people. Brew Monday serves as a reminder to check in with friends, family and colleagues. A simple chat over a cup of tea or coffee can make a significant difference in someone’s day.
Brew Monday is a beautiful reminder that small acts of kindness and connection can make a big difference. Whether it’s a heartfelt chat with a loved one or a quiet moment of self-reflection, this day is about prioritising mental health and fostering community. So, on 20th January, grab your favourite mug, brew a warm drink, and embrace warmth, compassion and meaningful conversations.
