Blue Monday - 18th January 2021

Published 18/01/2021

Oxford Dictionary defines Blue Monday as the following: “a Monday on which one feels gloomy or dispirited, especially because one has to return to work after the weekend.” It then goes on to say that Blue Monday is: “(in the northern hemisphere) a Monday in January, typically the third Monday of the month, that is characterized as the most depressing day of the year.”

As you may have noticed, the day this blog is being published is January 18th, also known as Blue Monday 2021! As this year, it’s even bluer than usual for most of across the UK – and indeed across the world – who are currently in lockdown due to Covid-19.

So then, what to do about that? In this blog I’m going to give some ideas on how Blue Monday can be made a little bit cheerier in this difficult time.

Positive Vibes Only

Everyone finds different reasons to be positive. It could be a relationship, holiday plans or a milestone in your life that keeps you smiling during tough times. But this year, there’s one thing that everyone can look forward to: the Covid-19 vaccine.

Initially, it was predicted that it could take many years for a single Coronavirus vaccine to become available. However, even the most optimistic among us would’ve struggled to predict that a wide array of vaccines would be available and being rolled out worldwide just a year after the pandemic began.

And so, it seems as though this horrible 12 months is finally reaching its conclusion, and a return to normal life could be as soon as this Easter. If there’s one thing that everyone can smile about, it’s that.

Other Reasons to Smile

Now that the Winter Solstice has passed, slowly but surely days will be getting lighter, weather will be getting warmer and nature will be getting greener. It may not seem like a lot, but a sunny spring day will always feel more positive than a gloomy winter equivalent.

In December, we published a blog on Self Isolating over Christmas, which you can find here. Some of the suggestions in there – such as video calling friends and family and finding a new series to watch on TV – are as relevant now as they were then.

It’s been a difficult year for us all and this will more than likely be the bluest of Blue Mondays. But – finally – hope and a return to normality is on the horizon.
