World Aids Day (1st Dec) & International Day of Disabled Persons (3rd Dec)

World AIDS Day happens on 1st December every year. December 3rd sees us mark International Day of People with Disabilities. We like to raise awareness of as many of these types of days as we can, so our blog today will tell you a little about each of these important awareness days, as well as a quick look at other awareness campaigns this December.

World AIDS Day

World AIDS Day provides an opportunity for people across the globe to unite in their support of people living with HIV and to honour the memory of those who have died from an AIDS-related illness.

Why is World AIDS day important?

According to their website World AIDS Day:

“Over 105,000 people are living with HIV in the UK. Globally, there are an estimated 38 million people who have the virus. Despite the virus only being identified in 1984, more than 35 million people have died of HIV or AIDS related illnesses, making it one of the most destructive pandemics in history.”

World AIDS Day works to remind both the public and those in power that HIV has not gone away:

"...there is still a vital need to raise money, increase awareness, fight prejudice and improve education.”

How to get involved with World AIDS Day

Shout about World AIDS day on social media #RockTheRibbon
There are a few ways to get involved with this campaign. The most visible way is to wear a red ribbon - not just on World AIDS Day but as often as you can. The red ribbon is one of the most recognisable ribbons people wear, having been around since the 1980s.

You can get a ribbon for free from their online shop.

You can also download an image for social media from the website here.

Remember to tag @nationalaidstrust (Instagram), @nataidstrust (Facebook), @NAT_AIDS_Trust (Twitter) and use #RockTheRibbon.

World AIDS Day also encourages people to get tested for HIV. They also encourage donations and fundraising.

International Day of Disabled Persons (IDPWD)

December 3rd has been the annual day of observance of IDPWD since 1992. The Day aims to promote understanding of issues around disability and support for the dignity, rights and well-being of persons with disabilities.

International Day of Disabled Persons (IDPWD)
According to their website, idpwd.org:

“The Convention on the Rights of People with Disabilities is an international human rights treaty of the United Nations intended to protect the rights and dignity of people with disabilities.

“Since its inception in 1945, the United Nations (UN) has outlined and reiterated its commitment to calling for the creation of inclusive, accessible and sustainable societies and communities – most notably with the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1948. Over time, the UN has honed its focus on promoting the well-being and welfare of people living with disabilities, and in 1992 called for an international day of celebration for people living with disabilities to be held on December 3 each year.”

What is the theme of IDPWD 2022?

The theme for this year’s awareness day is innovation and transformative solutions for inclusive development: “Transformative solutions for inclusive development: the role of innovation in fuelling an accessible and equitable world“.

How can I get involved in International Day of Disabled Persons

You can donate to IDPWD by visiting their website. They also encourage you to raise awareness by holding a fundraising event. They have a list of fundraising ideas on their website, here.
