Commonly known as “Man’s best friend”, owning a dog comes with many benefits. While owning a dog can be a lot of work, it is also one of the most rewarding things you can do.

Here are a few reasons to get a dog:

“Man’s best friend”

Owning a dog has been shown to reduce feelings of loneliness. As the term “Man’s best friend” suggests, dogs are fantastic companions to have. Owning a dog can also make you feel safer, particularly if you live alone, as their bark can act as a natural burglar alarm.

Be more active

Like us, dogs need regular exercise to stay healthy, so having a dog of your own is a great way to encourage you to get more exercise by taking them on regular walks. This can also lead to new adventures as you find new places to explore together. Studies have shown that dog owners typically get more exercise than non dog owners, possibly because simply having a dog to walk gives you a reason to get out and about.

Reduce stress

Dogs are commonly used as therapy animals in hospitals and retirement homes, as studies have shown that dogs can alleviate feelings of stress and anxiety in people. A pet dog will offer comfort when you’re feeling unwell or just having an off day.

Be happier

Just 15-30 minutes spent petting or playing with your dog can increase levels of dopamine and serotonin in your brain, making you feel happier. They also provide an endless source of entertainment.

Affectionate

Dogs are known to be extremely loyal pets, and you can always count on them to be happy to see you and spend time with you. They will love you unconditionally, becoming a member of your family before you know it.

These are just a few of the reasons to get a dog. Owning a dog is a huge responsibility, so make sure you’re fully prepared if you’re thinking of getting one. Do your research, and make sure you have everything in place before you choose the new member of your family.
