I joined Bernard's team in November 1987, as a Tracer/Technician. He was a wonderful man, kind and generous with his time and support. He used to wander around the office in his slippers with his pipe clenched between his teeth, even if it wasn't lit. He used to remind us in the gentlest way that we were there to work, not chat. Bernard was a great Engineer and I will always remember him fondly, thanking my lucky stars that he was my Boss

I joined Stoke on Trent CBC in November 1971, working as part of a remarkably small and efficient team, on the design, to contract stage, of by far the largest highway scheme ever delivered by the Council, A500 ( D Road ), before the service was taken over by Staffs CC upon Local Government Reorganisation.
The massive and complex Project, and its spin offs, was a staggering achievement, driven and managed by Jeff Farrington, and his fiercely loyal and trusty lieutenant, Bernard Webb, whom I only knew through work.

I’m writing this tribute, because I think this really needs saying:

I sat next to Bernard for some considerable time, during this period. His heart and soul was unfailingly vested in his work; a true public servant. What shone through was genuineness diligence and honesty.. not a sign of plagiarism or FOCUS on the promotion ladder. I doubt Bernard could have recounted what his salary was, without thoughtful consideration, just his customary kindness, endeavour, and focus on the job in hand. The uncashed car mileage cheques accumulated in a drawer for up to a year, and his mug of cold coffee, were a standing joke in the office.
RIP , Bernard. It’s all very sad, and you were certainly one of the best: a great credit to yourself, Joyce and family.

I, too, worked with Bernard - a true gentleman who enjoyed a laugh. He will be sorely missed by so, so many. Thank you Bernard for your support.

I had the pleasure of working with Bernard for many years and he was a great friend, a man of the highest integrity who never had a bad word for anyone and a first class civil engineer. Whenever you drive along Etruria Road from the D Rd to Festival Park, think of Bernard because that was one of his many jobs. My wife and I send our deepest sympathy to his widow Joyce and all his family. He will be very sorely missed. The world needs more like Bernard not less.
