Eulogy - Part 3

Mum and Dad moved back to Leicester and it has been such a blessing to move into Muston Gardens with so many like minded people. I know that he would take comfort that Mum will be safe there.

Robin Walker, a great family man, a man of faith. Rest in peace Dad, we will all miss you.

Eulogy - Part 2
My own favourite times with Dad were going to watch Leicester City. He took me to my first game in 1975. By the early 80s we started to go to away games. Even if there was a mini riot going on outside, as football violence reached it’s peak, Dad just led me along like he was out for a Sunday stroll. If Dad wasn’t working on a Saturday morning, he would come out and help me on my paper round. I loved our weekly Snooker games.

Kathryn loved watching Laurel and Hardy films with Dad as well as Norman Wisdom. Dad particularly liked Wallace and Gromit and did a great 'more cheese Gromit' impression. Kathryn also remembers meeting Dad on his way home from work and riding on Dad's handlebars to the house.

Whilst Dad worked at a number of factories over the years, I think that it was his time at Pick’s in town he enjoyed the most. He even managed to catch a burglar one evening.

Dad was always a man of faith. Mum and Dad loved the fellowship of attending church and Dad served as a helper and elder over the years. He also encouraged Kathryn and myself to attend Sunday school.

Dad was also a smart dresser and very often wore a tie. Indeed it’s hard to imagine Dad without his tie. He enjoyed singing. I can remember him yodelling when we were younger. Kathryn remembers Dad singing Chas n Dave songs.

Mum and Dad enjoyed walking at weekends and dancing. Dad started jogging in his 40s. He could only run to the end of the street to start with but he stuck at it and was comfortably running over 4 miles.

Upon retirement Dad and Mum moved to Weymouth. This was definitely Dad’s favourite time in life. He could walk and run to beach. There was a RSPB nature reserve for birds close to where they lived.

Dad loved all 4 grandchildren. Playing on the beach. Pointing out birds as they flew by. Mum and Dad helped with childcare and in many other practical ways. He was proud of them all. I think the birth of Lewis his great grandson was a really special moment for him.

Eulogy - Part 1
I just wanted to start by saying thank you for coming along this afternoon. Your support, cards and messages have been a real comfort to Mum, Kathryn and myself as well as to James, Matthew, Liam and Chloe. I would also like to thank Mike for officiating today and his work behind the scenes. Also to Jules for his excellent poem, that is spot on and for all of his help to all of us.

Robin Walker was quite simply the greatest man that I have ever known. 68 years of marriage to Mum. Adopting Kathryn and myself when we were so young, providing such a stable, secure and loving home.

Dad was born in 1934 in North Yorkshire and his first memory is coming down on the back of the removal truck to Leicester when he was 4. With his siblings Muriel, Cliff and Sylvia, they settled into life in Leicester.

Dad played in the old craters as a child and loved attending church.

Mum and Dad were married on the 22nd December 1956 at Humberstone Church. Mum and Dad had been friends before courting and enjoyed dancing and walking. They were a great couple, complementing each other.

His Dad Tom advised him to ‘get a trade’ and Dad started an engineering apprenticeship.

Engineering suited Dad. He was excellent at his job and we have received some lovely memories from one of Dad’s ex apprentices, Les, from Jones and Shipman, who is now in Australia. Les and his wife Sue have sent many supportive messages.

Dad could turn his hands to anything. Complex machinery at work but fitting new bathrooms, repairing all of our cars, in my case he helped keep some real bangers on the road, as well as broken boilers, nothing was too much. He built me a fort which I still have and Kathryn a dolls house, which were a real labour of love.

We enjoyed many great family holidays, particularly on the Isle of Wight but also at Pontins, in Prestatyn, in Weymouth and Sutton on Sea. Dad loved being on the beach with us and always managed to keep us entertained on those rainy days.
