Paul was my cousin. There was a seven year age gap between us so we didn't see too much of each other except at family gatherings. I remember seeing him on the platform at Noah's Ark Chapel anniversary in Netherton, singing and reciting poetry giving lots of pleasure to the congregation and thoroughly enjoying himself.

We kept in touch at Christmas with cards and letters. The last time I saw Paul he gave me a big hug and said how much he enjoyed the letters and to keep sending them. I shall miss his letters to me.

It's lovely to share these memories together as well as seeing how everyone remembered Taidy individually. For me Taidy is synonymous with the mountains. The memories I cherish of him the most are stumbling along rocky paths in Snowdonia, sharing packed lunches and him striding off ahead whilst me and dad would try to keep up.

He had a wicked sense of humour, the cheekiest of grins, and the kindest of hearts. He was wise, warm and had time and patience for everyone and everything. Whatever future mountains I climb, I'll be looking ahead for you Taidy.

When thinking of Taidy, two memories come to mind.

The first is when staying at Bramble Cottage with the rest of the McDermott clan. I was in Nain and Taid's bedroom watching Taidy put on socks inside out (a quite baffling process to a 5 year old), I had never seen such a thing and he showed me how to do it. The trick, he said, was to create a dent at the toes to pull over the rest of your foot. With this knowledge I stormed over to the room I was in, and declared a challenge to Jadie: who's was faster, my new way of putting on socks or her conventional normal way? Annoyingly I did lose, but I was 5 in my defence.
The second was in preparation for a scout’s badge: woodworking. So over the summer when in N.Wales, Taidy and I built a bird house. I still have a vague recollection of the process but the overwhelming feeling was fear of spiders in the shed. Moving past that however, a lovely home for a bird was made with a lot of graft mostly from Paul. I like to think the house still hangs on the wall of 7 Church Green where we put it.
Taidy, you are a witty, handy and the tallest Stanton I have met. You will be dearly missed, the only Taidy I have and need.

Paul really was an absolutely genuine, lovely man who I really looked forward to seeing and I am so glad I had the opportunity to know him. I know my parents and family also felt the same. He will be much missed. Deryn x
