Tribute to Our Dad (Part 3)

Christmas was always a special time, spending time at Auntie Anne's farmhouse with family and friends, partying and playing games, memories of dad joking around and turning Auntie Sandra upside down - he really loved family.

For many years as a family we were immersed in the life of Worthing Salvation Army.  Our mum and dad ran the Monday night Youth Club.  Dad was in the Army band, mum in the Songsters and Ange and I sang in the Singing Company and played timbrels.
At Harvest time dad was always chosen to auction off the harvest festival produce, probably because they knew he would always manage to persuade people to part with their hard earned cash for a good cause.  He always was a great salesman!

Yep dad was always the life and soul!

He has been a great dad, grandad and great grandad.  He always took an interest in you as a person and time spent with dad was always time well spent.

We know we all miss him terribly. There is an unfillable hole that will stay with us until we meet the Lord face to face, but we are going to do our very best to fix our eyes on the One who taught our dad to love and we know that He will help us make it through each heavy day. It is hard to imagine life here on earth without him but in the depths of our grief we have hope, knowing that He is currently soaking up the immeasurable beauty of heaven and someday we will all meet him there.

As we enter these days ahead, please, please, please keep reaching out. Keep telling us stories about him, help us find joy amidst our grief by celebrating the legacy he leaves behind. Ask us to share memories about our dad. And may we all know that even in this unbearable pain, the Lord is present and God is in control.

We miss you dad, we wish we could see you and give you a great big hug and tell you that we love you but one thing we do know was that you loved us and you knew that we loved you too.

Tribute to Our Dad (Part 2)

In the past few weeks we have talked and shared so many good memories of our dad. We have been so thankful to be surrounded by our family and to see how they have all been so thoughtful and supportive in so many different ways.  Something dad would have been proud of.

Our grief is intense because we are all close, we were so blessed to have had him in our lives - he wasn’t just our dad, he was Grandad and Great Grandad to our children.

There is so much more we’d like to tell you about our dad and these are a few tiny glimpses of who he was; some memories whilst we were growing up:

Our dad.  He wasn't really a gardener but once I remember him growing amazing sweet peas for our mum on a garage wall just because they were her favourite.  In a previous home in Kelso Close he grew corn on the cob in our rather small garden, don't think he knew how much space it would take up!  There was hardly any garden left!

On Saturdays he often spent time doing jobs around the garden and house, following this he would always enjoy a bath whilst listening to the football results on his Roberts radio.

We remember holidays in Cornwall and St Ives spending time with Salvation Army friends, playing rounders and cricket on the sand.

There was even a time he took Ange horse riding, he thought it was a good idea at the time but not an activity I think he would have wanted to repeat. His legs looked like he was still on the horse when he arrived back to my mum and I!

Dad always had so much time for us growing up, he'd let us bury him in the sand, play cricket with us, teach us how to body board.   Oh and on holiday he always seemed to buy an inflatable dingy, I'm sure that was more for him though, as we'd be on the sand watching him float around in the sea with his arms and legs drooping over the sides of the boat.

Tribute to Our Dad (Part 1)

Friends and family - thank you so much for being here with us today to celebrate the life of our dad and to grieve with us. We cannot believe that he went to be with the Lord and we are absolutely devastated that we do not get to see his face again on this side of heaven. But for now we ask that we look back on his life and celebrate the truly incredible man that our dad was.

Ange and I really felt that our dad would love for us to sing for him.  The words of the song we sang are so true, our foundations have been shaken and our hearts are breaking at the loss of our dad. The words of the song that say 'when it feels all hope has faded' are so difficult to sing, as we remember being by his bedside in hospital knowing that dad wasn't going to pull through. But our story is always going to be 'God you still reign and you're still God'.

Fathers Day at 12.30am I received a call from Ange to say that dad had been rushed into hospital following a fall on the stairs, a few hours later he had had a stent put in and was comfortable.  The following morning we phoned the hospital to see how he was doing and asked when we could see him, the nurse said 'it would be good if you could come'.  Unsettled at home we decided to go straight away rather than wait for visiting times, Paul dropped me off at the hospital and I went to see the nurse on the ward, she put her hand on me and told me that he wasn't doing well and took me into a side room as the medical team were with dad.  Paul, Emily, Hannah, Lauren, Ann, Alan and Vicky all came as quickly as they could and we were all able to sit with dad, talk to him and listen to his favourite music.  Ange and family were able to see and talk with dad via Facetime and it was so special that at the end dad was surrounded by people he loved.  Just before 7pm we lost our dad.
