Paul Yuk BallPANGIt is with great sadness the family announce the passing of Paul (Yukball) Pang, 88, from Bristol,
on Friday 27th December 2024
at the Rosseti Care Home, Frome.
Born 23rd October 1936, in Bristol, to Chinese immigrants, Paul lived as a child through WW2.
He served his national service as a 19-yr old,
where he was based in Egypt as an acting Sergeant and marksman. He was one of the last to be evacuated during the Suez crisis.
He married Anne in 1960, becoming a step-father to Christina and then having 3 sons, Jonathan, Anthony and Andrew. In his early career, Paul worked at BAC for a few years and was also involved in some catering businesses in Bristol, with his father. However, the most success came when he moved to Frome in 1967 and opened Pangs Fish Bar; a rare mix, at the time, of traditional English fish and chip shop combined with Chinese takeaway and restaurant. In 1969, his brother, Yuk Ting arrived, becoming a part owner, as the business was so busy!
In 1976, Paul completed another dream, when he sold his house and business interests to buy and convert a large house in Woolverton, into a country hotel and Chinese restaurant. He even hosted Sir Harold Wilson there!
Soon after, Paul took a career change and after selling the hotel become involved in Building and Property Maintenance. Initially he worked alone but in 1992, he joined his son Anthony at Pang Properties Limited where he became a partner until he semi-retired in 1996.
Unfortunately, his wife Ann passed away in 1995 but he was able to find happiness again, when he married Janet in 1998. For over 20 years they travelled extensively enjoying many destination and cruise holidays both abroad and at home. He was affectionally referred to as “Alan Whicker” and they were able to realise a very happy and fulfilled time together. Paul was active with the Rotary, as a Governor of Hayesdown School and as a Trustee of the Blue House, where he felt he was able to give back to the local community. Tragedy again struck when Janet suddenly passed away in 2019.
Paul leaves 3 sons; 10 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren and 4 brothers.
For family and friends, the service and burial will take place on Monday 27th January 2025 at noon, at St George’s Church, Beckington.
A reception will be held afterwards at the Beckington Memorial Hall.
Paul’s Wishes:
In later life, Paul was more inclined towards celebrating a life at a funeral, rather than mourning, and he would have been happy for people to wear smart attire with a bit of colour, if they so wished.
Paul would have been happy for donations to be gifted to Cancer Research UK and Prostate Cancer UK in lieu of flowers at the funeral.
Prostate cancer was a contributing factor in his passing.
