It is with great sadness that I learned of the death of my good friend Norman McCord. We first met as long ago as 1956 at the annual summer dig at Corbridge when he was then a Lecturer at the Cardiff University and I a second year student of Agricultural Chemistry at Kings College Durham University in Newcastle.

As a post graduate I owed him a great debt of gratitude for recommending me for a sub wardenship at Henderson Hall in Newcastle where he was also a sub warden . My experience here was later to prove invaluable for my appointment as Warden of Sadler Hall in the University of Leeds, duties combined with my Lectureship in Agricultural Chemistry. In those days wardens played an important role as the age of Majority was then 21 and universities acted in loco parentis

Throughout the years Norman and I kept in contact and I often visited him in Cullercoats. I always rang him on April 14th to wish him a Happy Birthday - a date i couldn`t forget because my birthday mother`s was the same day. Sadly this year there was no reply and I rightly feared the worst.

Norman rest in peace
