Joyce and Dick were our next-door neighbours in Laird Place, University of Ibadan for about 14 years. As a child and teenager one learns values from those around you, and I observed their unfailing kindness and readiness to stand up for what they believed in. I will never forget Joyce's home-made mince pies every Christmas morning, and Dick standing in front of the silver birch in our garden telling the men who had come to fell it, that they would have to mow him down first. I am grateful to have been able to share some of my life with them. May God watch over you both as you rest for a while.
