ColinIRVINGRenowned Violin Maker Colin Irving Remembered
Colin Irving, a distinguished luthier, sadly passed away peacefully on Sunday, 23rd March at Dorothy House Hospice, aged 80.
A beloved husband to Christine, devoted father to his two children, and cherished grandfather, Colin's kindness and gentle spirit touched everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.
For over fifty years, Colin made a name for himself as a master craftsman, creating more than 200 fine instruments, including violins, violas, and cellos. His work continues to be played by leading musicians worldwide, with his cellos performed on by renowned cellists such as Natalie Clein, Leonid Gorokhov, Matthew Barley, Stjepan Hauser, and Raphael Wallfisch. Beyond crafting new instruments, he dedicated himself to restoring thousands of string instruments, ensuring their music would live on.
Colin worked from his home in the Chew Valley well into retirement, never losing the passion and precision that defined his career. Outside of his craft, he had a lifelong love of sailing, often found at the Chew Valley Sailing Club, and remained dedicated to his daily yoga practice. He was also an active member of a druid group, embracing his deep connection to nature and spirituality.
He leaves behind a legacy not only of extraordinary craftsmanship but of warmth, generosity, and an enduring love for music and life.
