I was sad to hear of auntie Penny’s passing after being incapacitated for quite some time.
I have happy memories as children when we swapped homes and stayed at Trennery which were the only holidays we had in those days.
Auntie Penny cared for us and provided a change from our home environment, and there was time to play cards and complete jigsaw puzzles although life was very busy making Jam, wine from fermented fruit peelings and kitchen gardening. I believe she often had a stall at Goonhavern, which earned a little extra money as times were hard on Cornish small holdings in the middle of the 20th century.
The attitude was to make the best of opportunities with a positive outlook.
Each time I drive past Carland Cross I remember times at Trenerry when I rode on the tractor with Uncle Douglas to the small garage which has since been replaced with a much larger one and a roundabout and now a dual carriageway.
More recently when Doug’s and Mary moved to Higher Langarth I drew some plans for the extension of the house. I remember uncle Doug’s 80th birthday there when mum was still alive and wea pleased that sisters from Ireland were also there and Dougs played music on the hand saw.
Later when our family were young, we sited our caravan at Higher Langarth, and Nicola and the children remember playing cards in the evenings with Auntie Penny.
My father Gerald, who is now 94 and living near us in Derbyshire would have liked to be present at the funeral but he is now not good at travel. Since the news of Auntie Penny’s passing he has reminisced about happy times walking around Cornwall in particular St Buryan, Boscastle and various gardens.
I had intended to come down for the funeral but recent medical interventions have made that more difficult however, please be assured of our thoughts and sympathies.
