Back in the late 80s I was working at a summer camp in New York state for adults with learning difficulties. I'd already completed one summer so I was promoted to a more senior position the following summer. One dark, rainy night a very tearful girl from Yorkshire arrived and all she kept saying was "I just wanted to work with kids!" after it had been announced to her that she was actually going to work with pensioners! I felt so sorry for her and kept repeating "You wait till tomorrow when the sun's shining, everything will look like and seem so much better"
Well that girl was Sharon, Pat's daughter and we soon became the best of friends. The summer progressed with lots of laughter and many memories. A couple of years later we both moved to New York and aquired permanent employment. Both our Moms missed us dearly as you can imagine and soon became friends themselves. In 1992 Hoover bagan advertising a special offer that if you bought a brand new Hoover, we they would give you 2 free return tickets to New York. My mom immediately called Pat and said "I'm buying a new Hoover, do you want to come to New York with me?"
Before you knew it, they had their cases packed and jetted off to see us! It was later proven to be the biggest white elephant ever and Pat and my Mom were jointly responsible for helping to bankrupt Hoover!
Over the next 30 odd years our families friendships have blossomed. Visiting each other's home towns and attending many family events. We've shared many a laugh and a few tears along the way. Marsden became home from home for me, my Mom and my Aunty Shirley with a warm welcome and a brew by Pat and Tom whenever we visited. We'll miss you greatly Pat, sat in your arm chair next to the fire with the elephant ornaments looking on.
So many wonderful memories over the years that we will remember fondly always.
Goodnight Pat and God bless x

Lovely lady that I only got to know late in life.
Always welcoming even in the years of infirmity and challenge.
If you can judge someone by the family they brought up she was a diamond.
Got to know too late, and gone too soon.
RIP Aunty Pat
