I just found Alan’s obituary. Alan sent me beautiful Christmas cards every year. A few years ago the cards stopped. I wasn’t sure what happened, but I sensed that he was unwell or had passed away. My name is Beth and my father John and Alan’s wife Rhina are first cousins. Alan and his family visited us in the US in the 1980’s. When I studied at St. Andrew’s University in the late 1980’s, I visited Alan and Rhina regularly. They were always so kind to me. My last visit in person was in 2000 when I came with my husband and my young son.
I know it has been a few years, but I was saddened to see the obituary. I will always remember both Alan and Rhina fondly. My condolences to Greg and Katy.

I lost my address book, and as I always sent Alan a Christmas card I tried to Google Alan instead just now and saw this incredibly sad news. I'm so sorry to read this obituary, Alan was a wonderful man and university teacher, with an incredible intellect and a brave and open mind. Without him, as a fish-out-of-water mature student, I would never have got onto the English course at University of Hull in 1989. He also introduced me to Timothy Taylor's Landlord bitter, which when I drink I always think of him. After I left in 1993, we kept in touch by Xmas cards and emails. He did so many nice things for me, and I'll never forget him. To Katy and Greg, I'm so sorry for your loss, and my thoughts are with you and your family. I will raise a glass of Landlord to Alan this Christmas, and to his wonderfully curious intellect, his sense of humour and warmth. Rest in Peace.
