BOB GRANTBob Grant, who died on 8 November, 2003, was a British comedy actor best known for playing conductor Jack Harper in On the Buses.
Smooth-tongued and confident, Jack had more success with the birds than his colleague Stan (played by Reg Varney) and relished in getting one over on the baneful inspector Blakey (Stephen Lewis).
On the Buses, with its bawdy music hall style of comedy, was a smash hit for ITV in 1969 and ran for seven years. It also spawned three feature films and numerous shows followed its example in following decades.
Robert St Clair Grant was on 14 April, 1932, in Hammersmith. He trained at RADA and paid his fees by working part time as a bus conductor. He did national service with the Royal Artillery and then embarked on a theatre career in musicals and comedies.
He had small roles in film and television before landing his prominent supporting part in On the Buses. After leaving the show in 1973 he returned to theatre acting and toured Australia in No Sex Please, We're British.
