I read this obituary notice with great sadness. My debt to Norman is huge. He put me on the path to further education, and consequently a career in a profession that meant that I, as single parent of 4 boys, who also remember him as a force for good in their lives, (I quote one of them " he gave much joy") and, now I am retired, and 70, and able to live a comfortable and interesting life, all owing to Norman. I was in frequent contact with him throughout most of my working life, but sadly lost contact with him when I left the Midlands and moved to Wales. I last saw him shortly after my mother's death in 2007, at my youngest son's wedding in Fife, at which he had been a guest. I wish I had been able to keep in contact with him, but life and other people's lives militated against it. I loved him.
