I met Don through business in the late 1970's and admired him greatly as a kind and gentle person always willing to help someone less knowledgable. I have fond recollection of the village fete and his train driving skills. Rest in Peace. A privilege to have know you Don.

We first met Don on moving to Brocton in the mid 1980s when we acquired a field for our horse next to where Don, although living in Weston, kept his horse with others.

We would all ride together on Cannock Chase and were often out for over 2 hours at a time. Don was jokingly nicknamed the ‘Galloping Major’ as his riding style was more ‘Tally Ho’ than classical. Having learnt to ride in the army he would often entertain us with his sword skills but with a riding crop. I remember him scattering a group of hikers on the Chase with a cry of “Coming through” as he galloped on! At Christmas time he would take us on a ride to include friends in the village who would appear at the sound of clattering hooves and somehow we would end up being offered a stirrup cup which of course was the whole idea!
He even introduced Dawn to the delights of riding which she thoroughly enjoyed. Obviously all good things come to an end and when he lost his beloved horse Swallow due to old age, Don gave up riding.

Don spent the next chapter of his life in the company of Dawn and when they married, spent many happy years together and with his extended family. We still saw Don and Dawn socially and they were well known at Weston Hall Restaurant.
Don was a real character and we will miss him. - R.I.P.
