Eulogy - Part 1
I just wanted to start by saying thank you for coming along this afternoon. Your support, cards and messages have been a real comfort to Mum, Kathryn and myself as well as to James, Matthew, Liam and Chloe. I would also like to thank Mike for officiating today and his work behind the scenes. Also to Jules for his excellent poem, that is spot on and for all of his help to all of us.
Robin Walker was quite simply the greatest man that I have ever known. 68 years of marriage to Mum. Adopting Kathryn and myself when we were so young, providing such a stable, secure and loving home.
Dad was born in 1934 in North Yorkshire and his first memory is coming down on the back of the removal truck to Leicester when he was 4. With his siblings Muriel, Cliff and Sylvia, they settled into life in Leicester.
Dad played in the old craters as a child and loved attending church.
Mum and Dad were married on the 22nd December 1956 at Humberstone Church. Mum and Dad had been friends before courting and enjoyed dancing and walking. They were a great couple, complementing each other.
His Dad Tom advised him to ‘get a trade’ and Dad started an engineering apprenticeship.
Engineering suited Dad. He was excellent at his job and we have received some lovely memories from one of Dad’s ex apprentices, Les, from Jones and Shipman, who is now in Australia. Les and his wife Sue have sent many supportive messages.
Dad could turn his hands to anything. Complex machinery at work but fitting new bathrooms, repairing all of our cars, in my case he helped keep some real bangers on the road, as well as broken boilers, nothing was too much. He built me a fort which I still have and Kathryn a dolls house, which were a real labour of love.
We enjoyed many great family holidays, particularly on the Isle of Wight but also at Pontins, in Prestatyn, in Weymouth and Sutton on Sea. Dad loved being on the beach with us and always managed to keep us entertained on those rainy days.
