I was lucky enough to be taught by Mr Stirrup at St. David’s Primary School for J3 and J4. He was a wonderful teacher and I learned so much from him. I have so many fond memories but am particularly grateful for the love of singing he inspired in me. I am reminded of him every time I hear ‘Mine Eyes have seen the Glory’, ‘Our God reigns’ and many more wonderful hymns. Nobody played the piano in assembly quite like him! I can still remember the words of the unusual Christmas concert songs that I’ve never heard since. I’ve never forgotten the trip to Paris he took us on in J4 and his story about trying to get a French chef to cook his steak well done! Rest in Peace, Mr Stirrup, in the words of one of the songs you taught us, now you’re ‘Going Home’.
