Doreen MaryROBERTSPassed away peacefully at the Laurels Nursing Home, aged 99, after a short spell in hospital. She was born in Cardiff, South Wales on March 29, 1924. The youngest child, one of 12 children, all boys, only eight survived. She went to boarding school in Wales, and at age 18, she joined the WRENS. Aged 20, she married Sid Roberts from Manchester and at the age of 21, had her daughter and at 24, had her son. Sid and Doreen moved to Wilmslow and made many friends. Doreen was very interested in music and creative hobbies. She enjoyed working at Umbro in Wilmslow, playing sport and dog walking, as they were both animal lovers. Sid and Doreen moved to Heald Green and spent a lot of time playing bowls with their son in Bristol and daughter in Cheshire, also babysitting their grandchildren. Doreen loved music, going to concerts in Manchester. Both Doreen and Sid enjoyed Crown Green Bowling and were part of bowling teams. Unfortunately when Doreen was 68, Sid sadly passed away. Then when her knees and hips were causing problems, she moved from Gatley with her dog Rosie, to her daughter and son-in-law’s farm in Bacup, Lancashire. Treatment improved her health, and at age 80 she bought a new car and had a party to celebrate. She loved all her grandchildren, and the family had six generations during 2021. By this time her beloved dog Rosie had died, she now had two kittens. Mum decided to make the move to Greenbrook House in Whitworth to be with friend Elsie, a time to make new friends. She joined Hallfold Church, but travelled regularly to meet friends at Central Methodist Church Bacup. Sadly with Covid, many activities stopped, and mum spent from February 2022 to date at the Laurels Nursing Home, where she celebrated her 98th and 99th birthdays with her family. She leaves daughter Christine and son-in-law Paul Worswick and son Malcolm Roberts. Granddaughter Holly, great granddaughters Lucie and her husband Marc, Jessica and her partner Chris Kenworthy and Esme, great great grandchildren Nathan, Josh, Sophie and Eva and great, great, great granddaughter Ava. Thank you to all the staff at The Laurel’s Nursing Home Bacup for their care. Doreen’s funeral service will take place on Tuesday, August 8 at Burnley Crematorium at 12.15pm. Family flowers only please. Donations if desired to Bleakholt Animal Sanctuary and the British Heart Foundation.
